🎈House Party Ideas
Mumblers have come up with some amazing party ideas to ensure their little ones have the best day yet. Here’s our pick –
⭐️Have a disco with their favourite music – draw the curtains, turn off the lights and get some flashing lights on if you can!
⭐️Play party games – all the oldies like musical statues, musical bumps and pass the parcel are still hugely popular but you can also introduce some new ones like Balloon Tennis and Balloon Tag – tie a balloon to everyones ankle and run around trying to pop each other’s! Last person with a balloon wins!
⭐️Get dressed up for whatever party you throw – in either full fancy dress or your finest threads (parents included!) One parent said this simple gesture made their birthday boy feel really special.
⭐️Put on a buffet just like you would at a ‘real’ party – sandwiches, sausage rolls, crisps, fairy cakes – all the birthday child’s favourites. Have a break in your party for everyone to go to the buffet table and fill their plates, then sit and eat the treats together.
⭐️Get a piñata and fill with your little ones favourite treats. You can get them online from Amazon or, even better, make your own using paper mâché! There are loads of tutorials online and it will also give you and the little ones a project to get stuck into.
🎈Get outdoors!
If you’re lucky enough to have a garden and you can face the cold (or have some heaters!), you can make every day activities extra fun by taking them outside!
⭐️Have meals outside as picnics and invite your little one’s ‘friends’ (teddies and dollies!) along!
⭐️Set up a tent in the garden and go camping! You could go all out with a campfire, marshmallows etc – lots of families were camping outdoors overnight during the first lockdown but its probably a little cold for that now so why not set up camp indoors and camp out in the living room?!
⭐️If you’re stuck for present ideas and have a garden, think about getting something they can use outside which will keep them busy over the next few weeks – it might be a little chilly but kids don’t seem to feel the cold as much as we do! One local dad said he bought his daughter a trampoline for her ‘lockdown’ birthday and she spent pretty much the whole of lockdown on it!
⭐️ If you have a projector, put it outside and watch a film of the birthday boy/girls’s choice under the stars (wrap up warm!!)
🎈Food Glorious Food
Special meals and treats can make an ordinary day extraordinary. Why not throw the rule book out of the window and let the birthday boy/girl choose what you eat all day?! Letting them eat all the things that are usually ‘banned’ or limited will really add to their excitement. If they want cake for breakfast, do it!! Maybe have a party buffet lunch/tea, order their favourite take away and stock up on their favourite snacks and treats to nibble on during the day.
🎈Zoom and Facetime
And any other forms of video conferencing I haven’t come across yet! It’s a great way to stay connected with family and friends and one local Mum whose son turned 4 the other day, said they were kept busy and entertained most of the day by all the Facetimes they had with their friends and family! Some mums have organised Zoom parties where the birthday kid gets dressed up, as do all their friends, and they have a little disco – they could even play musical statues together! You could also ask family and friends to record happy birthday messages and play them throughout the day.
🎈Virtual Day Trips
Take them to Disney Land, to look round the British Museum or have a trip to the Zoo. In a world where we can’t leave the house, we can go anywhere, virtually! Check out our blog here for some great ideas.
🎈Other Ideas We Love
⭐️ Host a family games day. You can do one outdoors and play ball games like catch and tag rugby as well as organise races, obstacle courses and anything else you fancy, or indoors – think board game challenges, charades and indoor obstacle courses.
⭐️ Do a Treasure Hunt around the house and/or garden.
⭐️Fill the birthday boy/girl’s bedroom or another room with balloons.
⭐️Finish the day with a movie night. Popcorn, hotdogs, fizzy drinks – you could even buy a big selection of sweets and make a pic n mix station for the birthday kid to tuck into!
⭐️Build a den and all have your tea in it
⭐️Get the neighbours involved – we’ve been told about neighbours making Happy Birthday banners for the birthday child so that when they went for their daily walk they could see that everyone was wishing them a happy birthday! Another take on it was to put a sign on the gate so anybody walking past can wish them a happy birthday and there’s a video online of a whole street going out to their front door and singing Happy Birthday to a little girl on their street 😍
⭐️Give them a pampering session – do their hair and nails, run them a bath with essential oils, give them a massage, manicure, pedicure and generally make them feel a million dollars!
⭐️Get some face paints and paint their/your faces
⭐️Be led by the birthday boy/girl. Let them decide the whole day – what they eat, what they do when they do it, how they do it. One local mum did just that and said her son loved having control of the whole day.
🎈Presents…and be Present
A lot of people we spoke to were ordering their little ones presents a long time in advance and asking family and friends to do likewise and get them delivered to the birthday child’s house. If you get caught short and can’t source the gifts your little one has asked for, you could do what one Mumbler Mum did – get creative and draw little gift vouchers for her daughter – trips they’ll take her on, a voucher for a restaurant of her choice to have her Birthday tea when this is all over and a voucher for her favourite toy shop.
Remember, your presence will be their favourite present. If your little ones are at home with you and you’re working from home, book the day off. Implement a no phone policy (apart from speaking to absent friends and family) so you’re not tempted to check social media, your emails etc. Remember, this time next year you’ll be back to celebrating their birthday by braving soft play, fighting the queues at a theme park or practicing crowd control with 15 kids, so make the most of this chance to just be with your child on their special day. By being completely engaged and present, and making a concerted effort to say ‘ok!” every time they ask you to play with their new toy (even when its the 75th time…..), you really will make it a day to remember for them.
So there you go, a few ideas on how to make their day as special as possible. But most of all, all they need is love. Stay home, stay safe. There’ll be plenty of time to celebrate again once this is all over. And from us at Mumbler, a huge Happy Birthday! ❤️
