Wondering what to do this Halloween during Covid 2020?
Trying to think of alternatives to trick or treating and Halloween parties in lockdown or quarantine?
Each parent will obviously make their own decision about how they wish to enjoy Halloween, but for those remaining cautious we have come up with some ideas so Halloween can be safe & spooktacular!
Halloween Games and Activities
A silly and fun game. Bobbing for apples or doughnuts. You could Halloween theme the doughnuts too. Obviously this requires close parental supervision, you may as well join in!!
Halloween Bowling
Lots of toilet rolls lying around? Perfect – pumpkin bowling it is then!
Halloween Glow Stick Disco
Pop on some “spooky” tunes and turn the lights down for dancing! To add to the atmosphere, cut out some eye shapes in toilet rolls and pop in a glow stick so you have spooky eyes watching you dance!
Spooky tunes playlist: Monster Mash – Bobby Pickett, Thriller – Michael Jackson, The Phantom of the Opera – Andre Lloyd Webber, Ghostbuster – Ray Parker Jr. Time Warp – Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Addams Family Theme Tune, Monster – Lady Gaga, Get your Freak ok – Missy Elliot and Ghost – Ella Henderson.
Spooky Halloween Hunt around the Home
When the Easter bunny visits our house he leaves cardboard bunnies/eggs and chocolate hidden around and the kids LOVE hunting it out. Why not give this a Halloween makeover? Print off some pictures of pumpkins and witches etc and hide them around the house (or garden) along with some Halloween treats (sweets or alternative suggestions listed further in this blog). Other ideas shown in the photos below, such a a ghost number hunt, hiding Halloween eggs or making lollipop ghosts to go hunting for.
We also have a Mumbler Halloween Treasure trail for you to download, print and cut out. Click here. Lots of spooky clues for the kids to follow, maybe they could find some treats as they go along or at the end?
Halloween Crafts
How about sending a ‘Happy Halloween’ card? Yes ok it’s not the normal Halloween tradition, but anything goes in 2020! Plus my kids are often more motivated to do a craft/ picture and spend more time doing it if it’s getting sent to someone.
Halloween Decorations
We decorate the house for Christmas. Well if we are spending more time in the house this Halloween then why not decorate now too! You can make some/all of the decorations too!
Pumpkin Calving / Decorating
There’s some AMAZING patterns and templates online to create a very professional looking pumpkin. There’s nothing wrong with the traditional spooky face either though.
If you are keen for the younger ones to get involved, and they want to do more than just scoop to insides out (a great sensory activity)!! then why not let them decorate a pumpkin with paints or pens?
Halloween Fancy dress / Outfits / Masks
You will be able to pick up a Halloween costume at most supermarkets. You may be able to purchase a second hand one (feel free to sell your old ones or ask about for any used ones in our friendly Facebook Chat Group – click here). You could make one too. There’s plenty of DIY inspiration on the internet. A full outfit isn’t required, why not just do a bit of face painting, or make an accessory such as a mask or witches headband.
Halloween Cinema
Create a Halloween at home cinema experience. You could all be in fancy dress and enjoy some Halloween food whilst watching something spooky. Click here for Spooky Film options by age group.
Eat, drink & be Scary!
My kids love a “party tea”. Even if there’s no friends over it just feels a bit more special for them if it’s buffet style! Why not adapt some recipes to make them fit the Halloween theme. It doesn’t need to just be sweets etc either, there’s plenty of healthier options eg ghost bananas, fruit platter pumpkins or pumpkin satsumas.
Alternative “treats” to sweets
Bubbles, balloons, stickers, pens/crayons, cereal bars, raisins, pumpkin satsuma, playdoh, chalks, stickers, bouncy balls, a book.
