Baby Classes Macclesfield – Baby Massage with Baby and You by Katie – a Mumbler Review
Baby Massage has a whole range of benefits – from nurturing the bond between baby and mum (or dad, nanna, aunty etc!) to soothing your baby, helping him or her to sleep, aiding their digestion and improving circulation.
I haven’t had chance to take Mini Mumbler 3 to many classes as I always have his big brother and sister in tow, so when we were invited to go along to Katie’s baby massage class I couldn’t wait. I wasn’t disappointed – the class was LOVELY – really relaxed and friendly, and left Mini Mumbler so chilled out he slept for hours afterwards – perfect!
When we arrived at the class I was immediately struck by Katie’s attention to detail – ambient lighting, calming music and at each station there was a towel for baby to lie on, blankets for mum to sit on, a towel to catch any little gifts baby might send your way when you take their nappy off during class (!) and a nice bottle of flavoured water. I’d done a massage class with Mini Mumbler 1 which I’d really enjoyed but the set up of Katies class was on another level and made me feel like we were at some sort of spa (which I suppose we were, since the classes are held at the Tytherington Club in Macclesfield…!)
The class was small since a lot of the attendees had been struck down by a cold (Mini Mumbler had got over his just in time for us to go along), but that just made it all the more intimate which I really liked. Katie started by explaining the benefits of massage – it’s wonderful for alleviating wind and colic symptoms, strengthening baby’s immune system, inducing relaxation and providing bonding moments through the release of oxytocin and endorphins (our love and feel good hormones) – when it should be performed and times to avoid, and gave some reassurance that if baby cried, pooed, needed a feed etc at any time during the class their needs came first and pretty much everything went!
Much to my surprise, Mini Mumbler LOVED the class – we’ve had a bit of a rocky start with him and he’s suffered terribly with tummy problems from colic and reflux, making him pretty unsettled. He seems to be coming out the other side now though and cooed and gurgled his way through the class, even enjoying the dreaded tummy time whilst I gently followed Katie’s instruction and performed his back massage. He also treated us to a few releases of wind (!!) which was brilliant since he can struggle to get wind up. Katie very clearly explained what she was doing at each step, in terms simple enough for even me, with my complete lack of coordination (if I should be going left I’m pretty much always going right), to understand. Katie explained the benefits of each stroke and seamlessly tailored the class to the babies’ needs – when one was getting fed up in a certain position she changed it slightly or sped up to ensure they weren’t unhappy. She also made sure to give alternatives wherever possible to avoid upsetting the little ones – if they are unhappy on their tummies for example, you can use a rolled up towel to elevate them, put them over your legs or even hold them against your shoulder.
The relaxed set up made it feel more like I was with friends than at a class, and rather than Katie talking ‘at’ us, she encouraged our input and invited our experiences so before long we were happily chatting away. The girl I sat next to was really friendly and we freely shared our parenting highs and lows whilst our babies cooed, cried and squealed (often in the same breath!)
At the end of the class there’s time to chat to the other mums whilst enjoying a treat from Katie’s box of chocolates. The Tytherington Club has a lovely child friendly cafe and Katie told me they often head down there to carry on chatting over a brew, so we did just that and got to know each other whilst the babies fell into a massage induced slumber ❤️
I can’t speak highly enough of Katie’s class – she really knows what she’s talking about and her easy manner puts everyone immediately at ease. The structure of the class and social time afterwards makes it a perfect way to meet and make friends with other mums with babies of a similar age – something you can never have too many of! It would be the perfect introduction into the world of baby classes as well as a good shout for groups of antenatal friends ❤️
