The best thing about ice cream is that there is no age limit! From babies to Grandparents (unless it’s rum and raisin you’re after) it’s the perfect treat for the whole family. We’ve found some fab places to enjoy some of the best ice cream available throughout Cheshire.
🍦The Ice Cream Farm, Chester
This family friendly farm makes for a lovely day out with the kids. They have a whopping 50 different flavours of home made ice cream. In fact, it’s the largest ice cream parlour in the world! They also do plenty of vegan friendly flavours and they offer yummy fruit sorbets too if that’s more your jam. Just a few flavours they offer include ‘Chocolate Ripple Cookie Dough’, ‘Rhubarb Cheesecake’ and ‘Unicorn’ (although I can’t confirm what a unicorn tastes like). Of course they still offer the more traditional flavours too like Vanilla, Strawberry and Chocolate for the purists amongst us. There are take home tubs available to purchase to keep you going at home too.
This place is definitely not just an ice cream parlour though. They have loads to keep the kids entertained. ‘Daisy’s Garden’ is a cute little playground with a soft bouncy floor featuring a huge mushroom that makes you feel like you’re in a Tim Burton movie. There are climbing frames and slides, mini-golf, ‘silvercone’ racing track, ‘strawberry falls’ as well as mini tractors to sit in and mini JCB style diggers to scoop up sand. It has a bit of a magical atmosphere to it, and the ice cream is the cherry on top.
There are places to buy other food and drinks as well as places for picnics and of course the all important toilets are on site too. There is plenty of parking as well as some disabled parking and the whole site is buggy and wheelchair friendly.

🍦Blaze Farm – Macclesfield
Winners of the Best Small Visitor Attraction Award in the Cheshire and Warrington Area, Blaze farm offers animals, a nature trail, tea rooms and obviously delicious home-made ice cream!
Their homey tea rooms offers sandwiches, soups and home-made cakes and so the farm operates a no picnic policy due to believing their farm should remain a free attraction for families. They therefore rely solely on sales of food and drink to be able to maintain this. Their ‘Hill Billy Ice Cream’ is made on the farm using milk from the peak district. They offer flavours such as ‘Caramel Coffee Chunk’, ‘Chocolate Orange’, ‘Raspberry’ and ‘Mandarin’. They also do a ‘flavour of the month’ which is very intriguing and luckily, it can all be bought to take home in 1 Litre tubs.
As well as it being a working farm with animals, it also has a very beautiful nature trail. Let the kids run off some energy in the pretty woodland and meadow that boast views across the village and see if they can spot the animal carvings and vast array of wildlife. There is a basic trail as well as a longer advanced trail. The first is easily accessible for buggies and wheelchairs, the other requires good footwear but leads to some really lovely views. Dogs are welcomed on leads all year except for the whole month of April.

🍦Granellis – Macclesfield
Granelli’s prides itself on it’s Italian style and tradition. It boasts a truly romantic story and love for real Italian style ice cream, beginning it’s story with Angelo Granelli, who learnt to make his ice cream in the mountain villages of Italy. It has been an established business since 1890 and boasts 30 scrumptious flavours available in cone, tub or to take home. They offer ‘traditional’ style ice cream with traditional flavours and some kids favourites such as ‘Raspberry Ripple’, ‘Vanilla’, ‘Strawberry’ and ‘Chocolate Ripple’, as well as ‘Italian style’ in flavours such as ‘Amaretto’, ‘Tiramisu’, ‘Salted Caramel’ and ‘Black Cherry’. There’s genuinely something for everyone. I’d say Granelli’s has us grown ups in mind just as much as the kids. They also do lemon and orange sorbets for something a bit fresher. Something extra special about Granelli’s is the quaint little museum attached to their parlour. If you call ahead they will show you around their collection of memorabilia and ice cream carts from over 100 years of ice cream making.

🍦The Real Fruit Creamery – Knutsford
The Real Fruit Creamery boasts, in their own words, the “freshest and most flavoursome gelato in Cheshire”. They pride themselves on using fresh, locally sourced produce and seasonal fruits to create their gelato as well as it containing no additives or preservatives. They regularly add new flavours to their menu which includes some seriously mouth watering offerings. A few of them being, ‘Honeycomb’, made with their own home made honeycomb, ‘Jaffa Cake’, ‘Banana and Toffee’ and ‘Chocolate Brownie’. Tell me those don’t sound amazing? They also offer milkshakes and their signature fruit kebabs which makes for something a little different too. All of their ice cream is made in their little Knutsford shop which they call their “hub of creation”. It’s definitely a place for something a little extra special for both parents and kids alike.

🍦Backford Belles – Chester
Backford Belles is a lovely little family run farm. They describe themselves as a ‘quiet farm nestled between Chester and The Wirral’. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and offer the all important ice cream as well as fresh ground coffee. There are plenty of delicious flavours to choose from (hello ‘White Chocolate and Passion Fruit’) and offer a couple of dairy free flavours too (‘Vanilla’ and ‘Mint Chocolate Chip’) as well as fruity sorbets. Knowing how hard it is to choose from so many flavours, it’s good to know you can get 500ml tubs to take home with you too.
They have a toddler corner, play frame and swings for the kiddos so maybe you’ll even get to eat your own ice cream before it melts?! There are hens, calves and ducks on the farm to say “hello” to, as well as necessities such as toilets and baby changing facilities.

🍦Snugbury’s Nantwich
Snugbury’s is a pretty ice cream farm that has been passed down from parents to their three daughters Hannah, Cleo and Kitty. They have built their farm up from selling ice cream from a cottage window to expanding and building quite a large ice cream factory. They pride themselves on being as eco friendly as possible using solar panels to run the factory as well as heat capture systems to reduce waste. They have some seriously fun flavours like ‘Death by Chocolate’ and ‘Carrot Cake’, some adult flavours like ‘Sloe Gin and Damson’ and some fruity favourites like ‘Real Strawberry’ and ‘Mango Sorbet’. All in all, 55 to choose from (and tubs to take home, phew).
Another lovely addition to the farm is their yearly sculpture created alongside engineer Mike Harper. This years is a 40ft Bumblebee made from straw and hand split wood. The bee shows support for The Bumblebee Conservation Trust, with 50p from every piece of white chocolate honeycomb sold going to the trust. It offers something a little different and encourages conversation on the importance of wildlife conservation with children whilst enjoying those sweet, creamy cones of joy!
