Look for a Book – the Hidden Book Fairies, Cheshire
It’s refreshing to come across a social media craze which has a positive impact on its participants. Around the country, Facebook Groups are popping up with the aim of encouraging kids to read. Members hide books for other children to find, the idea being that they will read them and hide again for others. Sounds great! We caught up with Hannah Condliffe, founder of the local Facebook Group ‘The Hidden Book Fairies- Cheshire‘ to see what it’s all about.
Hi Hannah! Thanks for taking the time out to talk to us. We’re really keen to support local people, businesses and groups at Mumbler and love that your Facebook group, ‘The Hidden Book Fairies- Cheshire’ is a local take on the national craze of hiding books for children to find. Tell us a bit about the project…
The aim is to hide a book and the next person finds it. The idea is to get children reading because quite simply, not enough are, given the distractions in modern life. Some children learn better from the ‘home learning environment’. Also, books can be expensive and the hiding and passing on element gives a chance to redress the balance.
Sounds brilliant! What made you start the group?
I have recently completed my BA (Hons) degree in Early Childhood Studies and one particular unit was called Language, Learning and Literacy. This looked in depth into how important reading and writing is from an early age.
It was just by chance that one day I was sat scrolling through Facebook and I came across an article from Cambridge Hidden Book (article is at the bottom of the fb site). From that moment The Hidden Book Fairies- Cheshire was created. The main message I would like to get across is that reading is FUN!!! The group also encourages physical exercise – children are walking to hide and find books.
What areas do you cover?
I set up the project to cover Cheshire and books are often hidden in Macclesfield, Congleton and Sandbach amongst other places. Books have even been hidden by people on holiday though!! Numerous people have approached me to set up sister pages in their own areas of Cheshire which is great and Biddulph, Nantwich and Alsager will soon all have their own pages.
To get involved in this brilliant project and get your little ones reading, join the Facebook Group here. Happy hiding!!
