Trick or Treating will likely be a bit different this year….the prospect of the kids dipping their hands in various buckets of sweets seems a bit unlikely – whilst I’ve read that the risk in terms of covid transmission is in fact fairly low, there are bound to be many families who aren’t comfortable with the usual Trick or Treating format and I imagine there are also going to be a fair few people who want to get into the Halloween spirit but might not want lots of people knocking on their doors.
Having said that, lets not Covid 19 ruin our little ones’ Halloween fun!!! Let’s do a Pumpkin Trail!
Similar to the Rainbow Trail, everyone can put a pumpkin in their window and the children can walk round over Halloween seeing how many they can spot! It can be a real pumpkin, a photo, a drawing, a motif – anything you like, or all of them! We’ve knocked a downloadable Pumpkin Trick or Treat Colouring sheet that you can print off, colour in and pop in your window if you want to keep it simple – click here.
You can play the Pumpkin Trail anyway you like – perhaps for every pumpkin the little ones spot, parents can pop a treat in their Trick or Treat bag – or you can add them up and dish out the treats when you get home. We’ve designed a sheet you can print off and use to complete the Trail (just mark off a pumpkin each time you spot one) – click here.
Children can do the trail at any time of the day.
This way they get to dress up and get in the Halloween spirit without knocking on doors and rummaging around in pots of sweets!
The trail will only work if lots of us take part though, so here’s what you can do to let people in your area know about it and hopefully join in!
🎃 Tell your friends and family – in fact everyone you know! – about the Pumpkin Trail and how it works. Tell people you work with, people at your gym, in your local shop – anywhere and everywhere!
🎃 Tag your friends in social media posts about the Pumpkin Trail so they know its happening;
🎃 Share social media posts about the Pumpkin Trail and this Blog with your friends and in any groups you’re a member of to spread the word;
🎃 Tell your childrens’ nursery, preschool, school and anyone else about the Pumpkin Trail and ask them to share the idea with all their childrens’ parents so they know its happening and can take part – you could give this Blog to them to share and they can use the downloadable bits if they want;
🎃 Print off this letter and post to through your neighbours’ doors (if you know them/think they won’t mind!) so they know about the Pumpkin Trail and can join in. Not everybody is on social media so won’t be aware of the Pumpkin Trail – older people in particular might not know about the trail but might want to join in to make the activity extra special for the kids. This letter explains whats happening and how they can join in, and even offers to make a pumpkin for them if they want you to!

Thanks to the Mumbler who suggested anyone happy to take part in Trick or Treating as well as the Pumpkin Trail pop a note on their door stating so – please make sure you take as many precautions as possible!
