We were lucky enough to get to road test one of the houses shortly before they were made available for general release and they are just lovely! I initially intended to do it just with the eldest Mini Mumbler (she’s 4) but when Middle Mumbler (aged 2) got wind of what was going on and hopped on his chair in anticipation shouting ‘yeah meee choooooo’ (‘yes me too’) I couldn’t leave him out, so we all got stuck in (apart from Baby Mumbler – he’s squarely in the ‘wrecking ball’ stage and I wanted to give us half a chance of producing something resembling a house, or at least an object….)
The kit comes in lovely brown paper packaging and contains home made gingerbread pieces (which are DELICIOUS, but more about that later….) ready cut into the shapes needed to build a house……icing sugar which you mix up to make the ‘glue’…….tubes of coloured icing to decorate the house with…..sweeties for yet more edible decoration……icing piping bag….instructions…..and a board to make/showcase your creation on.
The Mini Mumblers had a whale of a time sticking,. constructing and decorating the house and the activity even held the interest of Middle Mumbler who notoriously has an attention span of circa 2 minutes. The kit makes the activity accessible for really little ones like him (2) whilst being intricate enough for my 4 year old to feel like a ‘big girl’ whilst she did it. What’s even better is that the pieces are so well made and thought through, its hard to go that far wrong – believe me, we tried – we stuck all the parts together in the wrong order to begin with, then had a few false starts with the icing sugar, but it was all easily remedied and I was pretty proud of the finished result!!! I’m sure the more creative amongst you will put us to shame with your creations (and we’d LOVE to see them!) but for Mumbler HQ, this was a pretty good effort!
What I really liked about Festive Foodies’ kit, was that the Gingerbread itself wasn’t a mere afterthought – I find sometimes with food-type activities, the actual food element can be mass produced and generic tasting, but this is all produced right here in Cheshire, home-baked, and as a result, its seriously delicious!! The Gingerbread was a sweet, soft bake with just the right amount of ginger – you’d be more than happy if you bought it from a bakery – and if the proof of the pudding really is in the eating, the fact that it was all demolished by the end of the day speaks volumes!! Even Mr Mumbler, a wannabe food critic and self confessed food snob was impressed, as was the family baking Queen, Nana Mumbler.
All in all, Festive Foodies’ Gingerbread House Kit was a real hit with us. The eldest Mini Mumbler has asked (just a few times…..) if we can do another one; Middle Mumbler had a great time throwing icing sugar around the room and ‘decorating’ the house; and the rest of us thoroughly enjoyed the fruits of their labour with a nice brew. It’s a great, really affordable way to kick off the Halloween celebrations at home and support a small, local business at the same time. They also do Christmas Gingerbread houses (can’t wait to get stuck into one of those), Gingerbread houses for parties (restrictions permitting of course) and even vegan options, so there really is something for everyone! Check out some more of their gorgeously edible work below at the end of this Blog – in the meantime, here are some useful links if you’d like to see more of whats on offer and/or order –
We were gifted the Halloween House Kit for the purposes of preparing this Blog but the opinions expressed are entirely our own – we’ll never recommend something to our Mumblers which we aren’t genuinely impressed with and we loved doing the activity (almost as much as we loved eating it!)
