As parents we have a MASSIVE amount of skills we have developed over time. Skills that schools don’t necessarily teach.
You could go as far as printing off some little certificates (who doesn’t love a certificate right?!)
Obviously consideration needs to be given to the age and abilities of your child and the safety during any tasks. There’s plenty of ideas for both younger and older children, just adapt to suit.
⭐️How to neatly wrap a present ⭐️How to write a letter ⭐️Basic first aid ⭐️How to make an emergency call ⭐️Look after pets – feeding, changing their water, cleaning out the cage ⭐️Gardening skills – Weeding, planting seeds and taking care of plants ⭐️Public speaking – Assign a topic for your child to write a speech or convincing argument and then practice and deliver the speech to the family. ⭐️Relaxation skills / Meditation / Yoga – The internet is full of free resources to get you started. Cosmic Yoga on youtube is a fun way for younger children to get into yoga. ⭐️How to put up a tent – if you have a garden this is a great one to do, maybe even plan a sleepover outdoors! ⭐️How to ride a bike ⭐️How to Roller skate ⭐️Using cutlery correctly ⭐️Setting the kitchen table for dinner ⭐️How to use a tin opener ⭐️Making a sandwich – simple skills chopping / spreading / slicing ⭐️Meal planning – write a shopping list. ⭐️Following a recipe ⭐️Baking – How to bake bread would be a great skill to master! ⭐️Cooking – Having some meal staples under their belt such as: cottage pie, lasagne, spaghetti bolognaise and a curry. ⭐️Brush their hair / teeth ⭐️Tie their shoe laces ⭐️Fasten a tie ⭐️Making the bed ⭐️Changing the bed (there’s all sort of different techniques to get a duvet back inside a cover!) ⭐️Tidying ⭐️Cleaning – dusting, hoovering ⭐️How to load the dishwasher ⭐️Matching up socks ⭐️Folding clothes neatly and putting them away ⭐️Laundry – how to use a washing machine, where to put detergent, the different settings, sorting washing for different loads. How to read laundry labels (what’s tumble dryer safe etc). ⭐️How to iron a shirt (obviously one for much older children. we can not guarantee once they know how to do it, they will do it though… sorry) ⭐️How to sew on a button ⭐️How to use a sewing machine ⭐️How to crochet ⭐️How to knit ⭐️Managing Finances – recognising coins and their value, understanding the value of money, Budgeting, interest rates, how to make a major purchase (how to compare prices/ deals / interest rates etc) ⭐️An idea for younger children is to set up a tuck shop at home. Give them some coins to purchase snacks throughout the day. Have a price list for the snacks and price the items differently so they need to carefully consider their purchases and practice their maths skills. ⭐️Special skills – do you have any particular skills that you could begin to pass onto your child? Can you play a musical instrument? or dance? or draw?
Have we missed any?
